How to take care of a baby squirrel with your eyes closed?
This can be difficult for many first-time squirrel owners, but in order to have
an impact on this animal’s life that benefits both the pet and yourself, you
need to fully understand what you’re getting into before you commit to owning
this delightful creature. With that in mind, here are some tips on how to take
care of a baby squirrel with your eyes closed!
Let’s get into this article and
let me help you know How to take care of a baby squirrel with your eyes
closed,
Recognize
the symptoms
When you find a baby squirrel, the first thing you'll notice
is that they have their eyes closed. This can be alarming, but it's actually
fairly common for young animals as they are still developing their sight.
If the animal seems lethargic, there may be an infection or
injury that requires veterinary attention. If the animal is awake and alert,
make sure they're hydrated and feed them some fruit or something else that's
soft enough for them to chew on.
Make sure they get plenty of rest so they can recover from
whatever it was that brought them low in the first place. You should also watch
for any signs of dehydration like sunken eyes, dry mouth, cracked lips or dry
skin.
Don't worry too much if they don't want to eat right away -
once they've had some water and rest they will likely be feeling better!
What
he/she will eat?
A baby pet squirrel will need to eat every two hours during
the day and every three hours at night. They will require an animal milk
replacement, such as KMR or Esbilac, that can be found at most pet stores. It
is important to remember not to feed them too much since their tummies are so
small. Every hour on the hour, wake up in order to feed him/her.
Make sure you keep them warm and covered with a blanket
while they sleep as they cannot regulate their body temperature yet on their
own. The best way to get him/her used to being handled is by picking him/her up
after he/she wakes up from sleeping and letting him/her stay in your lap for a
few minutes before putting him back into his cage. Be sure not let anything
harm them while they are still blind and vulnerable!
Where to
keep him/her?
It's important to keep the area where you will be keeping
your new pet clean and dry. Make sure that you are storing food, water, and
anything else he/she will need in a place where they cannot get into it.
Remember that as he or she grows more mobile, you may have to adjust these
storage areas accordingly.
You should also set up a small box for him/her to climb up
on if he/she is feeling scared or lonely. If this seems like too much work,
don't worry-there are lots of other animals who would love to be your pet! A
great choice might be a ferret, who can live anywhere from 8 to 10 years when
properly cared for.
What are
his other needs?
This is the most basic, but necessary step in caring for
your pet baby squirrel. He needs lots of fluids and food, if he is not eating
on his own. Feed him warmed up, high-quality canned kitten or puppy formula by
syringe if he is not eating on his own.
Be sure the formula has been boiled and cooled down before
giving it to him. You can also feed him an egg yolk or mashed banana by syringe
if he will not eat on his own. If he does not want any of this, you may need to
force-feed him.
It's important that you give him oral electrolytes mixed
into water as well because squirrels do not drink from their water bottle often
enough on their own. After all this, be sure to give him some time out of the
cage every day so he doesn't get bored. If you see any signs of diarrhea (such
as diarrhea and/or vomiting), contact your veterinarian immediately!
What do
you need in order to feed him/her?
First, you need to find out the age of the baby squirrel. If
it is less than two weeks old, you will need to bottle feed it every two hours.
You will also need small animal formula and a pet nursing kit. It is important
that you mix the water and formula together so that it is not too thick or too
thin.
The next step is warming up the milk by pouring some in an
empty jar, adding boiling water and shaking for about ten seconds until it
reaches room temperature. What are some signs of dehydration?: One way to know
if they are dehydrated is if they have soft ears, sunken eyes, a dry mouth and
nose.
How often should I clean his/her cage? If they live indoors:
Every day or at least twice a week. If they live outdoors: Twice per month
during summer months and once per month during winter months.
